A better life on planet earth – reinventing the world (6/6) | DW Documentary

The final episode of “Reinventing the World – 500 years of the Reformation” looks at our present day, and new ideas for how our planet can survive.

Our series has finally reached the here and now. Today’s world is defined by globalization and digitization. These developments have brought with them unprecedented opportunities. In the last episode of “Reinventing the World” we meet young people laying the groundwork for the future.

Our Generation Y protagonists include gene researchers and astrophysicists, activists, bloggers and entrepreneurs. Sebastian Bartsch works at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, the largest research organization in its field worldwide. He and his team are building robot systems that provide human beings with long-term support. Journalist Wolfgang Gründinger is interested in digitization and sustainability, and fears the older generation has failed to understand the full impact of the digital revolution. New York-based artist Heather Dewey Hagborg explores ideas related to genetic surveillance, and calls her work made from people’s genetic detritus “bio art”. Alexander Gerst is an astronaut with a unique view of humanity and planet earth. Together, they review the progress made in the last 500 years – and ask themselves where we’re headed next.
